There are many different ways to challenge players with defensive drills. Coaches need to remember to keep the core of the game strong. Players need to learn how to catch a ground ball properly. The best infielders have great feet meaning they approach the ball so they can get their bottom half into throwing position. This mean moving toward the ball and the last few steps being small to position themselves. The glove needs to be positioned out in front of the body to help a player have “soft hands”. Encourage drill that make the player move their feet! Encourage players to catch the ball “out in front” and not catch ground balls between their feet. Make them field backhands! Practice short hops every practice! And make sure all drills have a purpose.
